Need to change mind set and long term planning for disaster risk reduction

3rd June 2009. Based on the experiences of relief and rescue activities aftermath of cyclone Aila, EquityBD and COAST jointly organized a press conference titled “ Need to change mind set and long term planning for disaster risk reduction” in Dhaka Reporters Unity. In this press conference organizers shared their experiences on first 7 days relief and rescue operation what they carried out in the southern part of Bhola island. They urged the government and other agencies to introduce ‘cash for work’ instead of relief distribution. Although relief distribution is indispensable during the initial days of disasters but long term relief operation would make local market and trading system dysfunctional. People are found running after relief; none showed interest to get involved with emergency activities like draining-out the saline and dirty water form the ponds, reconstruction of roads, and cleaning of environment even they are offered good wages. These emergency works could be done through food/cash for work; this approach also would support income generation and revamping of local market and production system.
