Cyclone Aila relief operation experiences: long term planning indispensable
Stop relief, initiate food or cash for work NOW

Dhaka 3rd June 2009. Today EquityBD and COAST, based on seven day experience of relief operation in remote islands,  has organized a press conference in Dhaka Reporters Unity, they urged government to Stop the relief operation immediately, rather to initiate food or cash for work now. The placed the reasons that prolong relief work has already created a negative impact in the area like, people are reluctant to  go for any work, and development workers are facing difficulties to get labor to repair necessary roads, cleansing dirty ponds etc. They also urged such a relief will also distort the local market to revive.

 
WDB and LGED must be reoriented toward local level participation and accountability
They also urged to deploy army to construct embankment in cooperation with Union Parishad, they criticized the Water Development Board (WDB) and Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) as anti people institutions, they demanded full re-organization of the those two department that have to be locally accountable and participatory. They urged government to take steps to construct spar first then to embankment but with concrete block so that it will have long term impact, that will encouraged people to live in the coastal areas and there will be little of migration.

 
Spar and embankment with concrete block is the only long term solution
Speakers also urged the committee members of climate strategy preparation committee to go to coastal area and to prepare the climate strategy with the participation of coastal people. Speakers also demand the trial of government official who did not spend single taka of government’s own climate adaptation fund of taka 300 corore from 2008-09 budget. They also demand World Bank out of MDTF fund, they criticized the role of government’s ERD division in this regard.

 
Raise climate refugee issue in international forums that developed countries must take the responsibilities and obligations
